Notes from our Green Buyer

Pulcal is an old farm that’s been in Luis Pedro Zelaya’s family since the 19th century. The farm holds his great-grandfather’s old, restored farmhouse, and the wet mill houses many old remnants of coffee producing history—so, it’s one of my favorite farms in the world to visit. It reaches over 1700 meters above sea level, creating a classic Antigua coffee, but with more vibrancy and complexity. This is the kind of coffee cup you want to keep coming back to.

Notes from our Roaster

It’s a nice change when one of your Antigua’s offers a little more acidity than usual! Normally, Antigua coffees (one of two main coffee growing regions in Guatemala) have a balanced, malic acidity (like apple/pear) with a sweetness closer to toasted sugar than fruit. But Pulcal tastes much more citric, which is balanced out with a juicy sweetness—creating the overall impression of lemonade. With a creamy mouthfeel accompanied by a sweetness reminiscent of honey, you have a lot to look forward to with this year’s Pulcal!
