Notes from our Green Buyer

The Barichu Cooperartive is comprised of four factories in Nyeri, Kenya: Gaturiri, Gatomboya, Karindundu, and Karatina. The Barichu Farmers Cooperative has close to six thousand members and strives to educate them on the necessity of farm management and husbandry. Almost 600 small lot producers deliver their cherries to the Gatomboya Factory to be processed.

Notes from our Roaster

A Kenyan with a tropical flavor profile is one of our favorite coffees to debut as a single origin! It’s a surprising twist to the tangy-savory profile you’ve come to expect out of Kenyan coffees. Rather than presenting an herbal or savory (dare I say vegetal) aspect, there’s a sweetness that accompanies its tanginess, which helps create a specific juiciness in the coffee – what we mean by “tropical.”  In these coffees, the herbal quality becomes less astringent and more floral, turning towards a more delicate, tea-like profile. Kenyan micro-lots like Gatomboya challenge our expectations of what Kenya can produce.
