Notes from our Green Buyer
Frinsa Estate was established in 2012 in direct response to recurring landslides and flooding closely tied to deforestation and poor agricultural practices on the steep terrain of the region. Based in the Bandung Highlands of West Java, Indonesia, the estate is owned by Wildan Mustofa and Atieq Mustikaningtyas. Today, their son, Fikri Mustofa is stepping into a leading operational role, ensuring both agricultural and familial continuity and sustainability in the region. Frinsa Estate says they are “built to outperform—not just participate—in the global specialty market.” And I would agree.
Notes from our Roaster
There’s unique challenge to bring you high quality, specialty coffee from Indonesia. Often, coffees don’t cup well and veer towards an earthy astringency resulting from poor processing methods and low standards. But the Frinsa Estate is especially clean, complex, and approachable. It’s got a bright malic acidity, reminiscent of white wine, and a slight, sweet herbal note, which reminds us of thyme. A coffee with this kind of nuance and clarity is best brewed as a pour over, like a Chemex or a V60. To bring out some of the details in the coffee, try different brewers: to bring out the toffee-like sweetness, brew it on a Chemex. To bring out the malic and herbal undertones, brew it on a V60!
