Notes from our Green Buyer
Finca Buena Vista in Guatemala is classic for us. We met Luis Pedro, who runs this farm, on our first sourcing trip in 2011. But this particular lot brings us even more excitement because of its really unique varietal. Luis Pedro’s Malawi Geisha (grown in Guatemala) offers the floral and fruit notes you might expect from a Geisha, but with more balance. If you’ve had Italian food in Italy, you’ll understand this coffee. Italy-Italian food is quieter than what we’re used to here in the States, but the purity of ingredients is so good—the subtly draws out a balanced complexity that keeps calling you back. This coffee is a beautiful example of complexity behind simplicity, and this is the reason it’s one of our all-time favorites.
Notes from our Roaster
This Malawi Geisha changed its tune this year! Historically, it’s highlighted subtlety over intensity, being one of the more balanced geishas coming through our Small Batch Release program. This year, however, Luis Pedro’s washed-processing method has really developed the fruitiness, with a louder berry note alongside a candy-like sweetness: think raspberry and watermelon candy. This coffee is both familiar and exciting. Try grinding it a bit finer to bring out the acidity and light floral nature of the this coffee. If you want to taste brightness, and every flavor clearly, brew it on V60. If you want lesser acidity and more body, try an Aeropress.
