Notes from our Green Buyer

A year after we met Luis Pedro Zelaya, a fourth-generation coffee farmer in Guatemala, he introduced us to Melanie Herrera, his new coffee mill operations manager. Her role was to help him grow their Bella Vista Coffee operations. A few years ago, we discovered Melanie had purchased a small piece of land to establish her own coffee farm, Finca Ofelia, named after her grandmother. She has since used the expertise and resources from Luis Pedro to produce exceptionally high-quality coffee of her own. It has been exciting to watch two old friends work together and support each other in their work – one of which is her very own Geisha. This varietal originated in Malawi, a land-locked country in Southeast Africa, but has been cultivated by Melania at Finca Ofelia. Of the 70+ coffees cupped in Guatemala that year, the Malawi Geisha lot from Ofelia was the highlight and still holds true!

Notes from our Roaster

We could call this lot “Vintage” because it’s from Finca Ofelia’s 2024 harvest. Ever since we received it, we vacuumed sealed this coffee and stored it away in our “vault,” a deep freezer dedicated to storing our best coffees. By freezing them, we’re able to preserve the quality of these coffees and ensure they don’t degrade from the time we receive them in our warehouse to the time we offer them. In 2024, this was certainly one of the most memorable coffees we cupped and has retained its vibrancy. Often, sweetness accompanied by acidity lends itself to a greater complexity within the coffee and that is exactly what you have here: a vibrant acidity alongside a juicy, cherry-like sweetness.
