Notes from our Green Buyer

Guatemala is famous for their washed coffees. Whether it’s a bright & juicy “Huehue” or a sweet & chocolatey Antigua. In general, the country plays one coffee song, but it is a classic that never gets old. We just love “washed Guats.” And our old friend, Luis Pedro, excels at them; it’s what we have built our 16-year relationship around. So, when he and Melanie put some wilder coffees on the table for us this year, we were slightly stunned and quickly homed in on some favorites. This is one of them! They took their Malawi Geisha Varietal and honey-processed it with perfection to make this coffee tangy, sweet, and full of layers that develop as it cools. We might be looking down the mug at a new classic!

Notes from our Roaster

This is certain to be one of the more memorable and celebrated coffees you’ll drink this year. There’s a couple of variables contributing to its uniqueness: the varietal originated in Africa and it’s a honey-processed coffee: having fermented in its mucilage (the fruity pulp around the seed) before the fruit is removed. The depth and complexity of this coffee’s sweetness will surprise you. Usually, coffees will present a fruity-sweetness or a sugary-sweetness—rarely both. The Carmona Honey, however, melds together a tart, almost tropical fruit note with a balanced sweetness much like buttercream.
